Church Lads and Girls Brigade

In 1998 the company reformed the band. The band went from strength to strength, incorporating bugles in 2004 and valved brass and woodwind in 2007.

The band performs in many of the local carnivals each year and combines with Hinckley Company to put on a concert each year.

The band decided to enter the CLCGB National Band Competition in 2002, finishing runners up in Novice and Winning Novice in 2003. After 2 years of consolidation in Contest Class, the band were Winners of Contest Class in 2006. For the last 2 years we have performed in Championship Class and in 2008 we also had a Junior Band in Novice, finishing Runners Up.

The company also organises a tour most years for the band to perform. Skegness, Weston Super Mare, Mablethorpe, The New Forest, Hastings, Clacton and The Isle of Wight, to name just a few.

THE CHURCH LADS AND CHURCH GIRLS BRIGADE

From about 1860 isolated ‘Brigades’ were formed all over the UK but the first to develop into a national organisation was the Boys Brigade, followed by the Gordon Boys Brigade and The Church Lads Brigade. The Boys Brigade would not accept an Anglican branch at St Andrews which led to The Church Lads Brigade being founded in 1891. The Gordon Boys Brigade amalgamated with the CLB at the same time. A similar organisation for girls was also established in 1901 called the Church Nursing & Ambulance Brigade. The Church Nursing & Ambulance Brigade sought a merger with the CLB in 1922 and changed its name to The Church Girls Brigade but the CLB rejected the offer. The two organisations eventually amalgamated in 1978 to become The Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade.

The Brigade is an Anglican Youth Organisation with the object of extending the kingdom of Christ but is now open to children of all faiths and non faith communities. This is achieved by a varied mixture of badge work, drill and games on a company night and band practice on another. Various inter company events are arranged on both a local and even national level.

ST MARYS BARWELL CHURCH LADS AND CHURCH GIRLS BRIGADE – WHAT WE DO

The Brigade really does offer something for everyone. You get the opportunity of trying lots of different activities on a ‘company’ night and you can also take part in the various activities we have at the weekends.

Each week we have an exciting mixture of crafts, games and much more……Each age group follows a badge scheme which lets them gain badges which are worn on their uniform. Uniforms for the younger ages comprise a navy blue sweatshirt and baseball cap.

Our leaders seek to create a caring and safe environment in which friendships can be established, helping children to grow in confidence, developing their skills and abilities and helping them to work together showing care and concern for others and their village.

Some of our activities

Football, Netball,   Athletics,   Unihoc,    Camping  ,   Arts & Crafts
